Central celebrations commemorating the murders of Poles in Volhynia took place in Warsaw. A solemn Holy Mass was celebrated in the field cathedral of the Polish Army in Warsaw. It was attended, among others, by Jan Józef Kasprzyk, head of the Office for Veterans and Victims of Oppression. President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki took part in the celebration of the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Genocide committed by Ukrainian nationalists on citizens of the Second Polish Republic in the Wołyński Square. On July 11, the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Genocide committed by Ukrainian nationalists on the citizens of the Second Polish Republic is celebrated. This is the 79th anniversary of the so-called Bloody Sunday, when the greatest wave of murders of Poles took place in Volhynia. This holiday is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Volhynia massacre – it was established by a resolution of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. In a resolution adopted on July 22, 2016, the Sejm paid tribute to the victims of the murders of citizens of the Second Republic of Poland (Poles, Jews, Armenians, Czechs and representatives of other national minorities), carried out in 1943-1945 by Ukrainian nationalists from the ranks of the OUN, UPA, SS-Galizien and other formations. The crimes against Poles were often committed with extreme cruelty: people were burned alive, thrown into wells, axes and forks were used, and the victims were elaborately tortured before their death; women were raped. Researchers calculate that on that one day, July 11, only 8,000 people could have died. Poles – mainly women, children and the elderly. The „Volhynia Crime” concerns not only mass murders committed in the territories of Wołyń, i.e. the former Volyn voivodeship, but also in the voivodships of Lviv, Tarnopol and Stanisławowski (Eastern Galicia), as well as in the voivodships of Lublin and Polesie.

This crime was, in fact, genocide, because its aim was to carry out an ethnic cleansing by murdering Poles, President Andrzej Duda said today. The president, along with, inter alia, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki participates on Monday in the celebration of the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Genocide committed by Ukrainian nationalists on the citizens of the Second Polish Republic. The ceremony takes place at Skwer Wołyński in Warsaw. – It’s always a difficult time for us, Poles – this beginning of July every year from that memorable 1943, when exactly in July, on bloody Sunday, the biggest wave took place, and on Sunday, the culmination of the crimes committed at that time on Poles living, in particular, in Volhynia, in the east of the then-German-occupied Poland – said the president during the ceremony. – To a crime that was in fact genocide, because its aim was to carry out an ethnic cleansing by murdering Poles, to cleanse that land of the Polish minority – he emphasized. He recalled that those events took the lives of a total of over 100,000 people. – In Volhynia itself, between 40 and 60 thousand were murdered and killed – which we emphasize with great pain and despair – by our neighbors. Because it was like that, that they lived next door, often related by various family, friendly and related ties – recalled the president. Today there are very few witnesses of that crime who saw it with their own eyes as children. Then, as a rule, remembering that nightmare in a blur, when their lives were saved, when they fled with the parents of (…) those who had been expelled – said the president. Over half a million have carried and carry a terrible tear in their souls, a wound that often heals with great difficulty. I hope it’s scarred, but the trace remains – said President Duda.

The Prime Minister of the Polish government said: It is all about the truth

The Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki

The conspiracy of silence about the Volhynian crime must be broken – said Mateusz Morawiecki during the celebration of the 79th anniversary of the slaughter. – Standing here, I was looking at this cruel monument, beautiful in its symbolism, and on which there are ax blows. Ax blows weren’t the cruelest kind of death they inflicted. They were much more cruel, which is why this crime of genocide is extremely barbaric and unique in its bestiality – he said. – Therefore, the decades of silence, at first between the rulers of the People’s Republic of Poland, who obeyed orders from Moscow, and later maintained by the elites of the Third Republic, must be broken – stressed the head of the government. – That is why it is my obligation: I will not rest until we find the last grave, the burial place of those murdered from Volhynia and the entire Eastern Borderlands. This reality must be fully discovered, declared the Prime Minister. He recalled that many times in his life he had spoken with „eyewitnesses of those terrible events.” – There are many stories and memories in my heart, the kind when quoting words get stuck in my throat – he added. He said that his mother lived in the Stanisławów poviat during the war. – Many of her stories testified to what Poles experienced from their neighbors, sometimes from family members – he said. According to the prime minister, „this incredible hatred, which then guided the Ukrainian hand, must not be forgotten, because if someone, even guided by good will, wants to cover those facts, that reality with the dust of oblivion, forgetfulness, it harms both our nations”. „Therefore, there will be no reconciliation based on falsehood, based on forgetfulness, based on a lie,” he added. – And this must be the starting point, and this is the starting point for reconciliation – assessed the prime minister.
